When I became pregnant for the second time, I knew I wanted to approach this pregnancy totally different than my first. I wanted to be more mindful about health and wellness and do things to naturally support my body throughout my pregnancy. I’m not perfect at this by any means, but I’ve seen a huge difference in how I’ve felt between each pregnancy. I’ve made sure that everything I put into my body while pregnant was good for both me in the baby. Okay maybe not everything- because cereal, ice-cream, and taco cravings are as real as can be 🙂 But I’ve done a pretty good job for the most part and I’ve definitely felt a difference between my two pregnancies and how I’ve felt.
I truly believe that wellness is about so many things and not just what you eat (although that’s an important part of it). So I’m not only mindful of what I eat while pregnant, but of what vitamins I take, what products I put onto my skin (because everything put onto our skin absorbed into our bodies), and even the things I read and watch everyday- because I believe mental and spiritual health is important too!
As I near the end of my pregnancy, I wanted to share what some of my pregnancy essentials are.
Pregnancy Essentials for the Natural Mama
Nutrition & Supplements
Raw Local Milk: I started drinking raw milk in my 7th month of pregnancy and I wish I had started this much sooner! Raw milk is rich in active vitamins and minerals, and provides you with lots of enzymes and probiotics throughout pregnancy. I’m actually lactose intolerant but because of the enzymes in raw milk, I can digest it without any problems! It’s also full of lots of things that support a mama and baby’s immune system and a healthy gut. On days that I don’t have a big appetite, I love drinking raw milk because first, it tastes delicious, and second it’s a great way to give mine and the baby’s body nutrients that we need! You can read more about the benefits of raw milk here.
Probiotic Rich Foods: I love eating fermented foods, especially while pregnant! They are full of good enzymes and probiotics that mama and baby both need for a healthy gut. They also boost your immune system, aid in digestion, are rich in vitamins, high in fiber, and help prevent infections. Some of my favorite things to eat/drink during pregnancy are kefir, greek yogurt, kimchi, bone broth, and kombucha. I love drinking kefir throughout the day or mixing it with fruit and granola for breakfast. I’ve been craving kimchi like crazy throughout this pregnancy and it makes the perfect snack! I don’t eat bone broth by itself, but I love mixing it into our dinners. And I love drinking a cup of kombucha in the morning after breakfast. This is a great article to learn more about the benefits of eating fermented foods.
Prenatals: Prenatal vitamins are so important to take during pregnancy and for most of my pregnancy I’ve been taking the Seeking Health Prenatal. This pregnancy, I opted to take a prenatal that doesn’t contain any synthetic vitamins and one that is made with folate instead of folic acid. I’ve loved this prenatal but I actually just recently switched to the Smarty Pants gummy prenatal. These are also made with folate and free of all synthetic vitamins. I highly recommend both!
Super B: In addition to my prenatal, I also take a vitamin B complex daily. I love the Super B from Young Living because it contains all 8 essential B vitamins, including methylcobalamin which is the most bioavailable and active form of B12. There are so many benefits to taking a B complex vitamin during pregnancy- it helps boost energy levels, helps prevent birth defects, aids in baby’s development, and much more!
Ningxia Red: This is one of my favorite things to drink all the time, but especially during pregnancy. It’s a super fruit juice made from organic Ningxia wolf berries and it contains an insane amount of antioxidants! Just 1 oz of Ningxia Red contains the antioxidant power of 10 pounds of spinach, yes 10!! So I drink at least 1-2 oz everyday. It also naturally increases energy levels, boosts your immune system, and contains lots of amino acids, trace minerals, and vitamins. So drinking it is a great way to support a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby.
Red Raspberry Leaf Tea: I haven’t started drinking this yet, but I will start at 34 weeks. Studies show that drinking it during pregnancy can make labor faster, reduce complications during labor, help soften the cervix, strengthen the uterus, and reduce pain during labor. I plan to drink 2 cups a day beginning at 34 weeks. You can read more about RRLT here.
Belly Butter: I use my own homemade recipe for belly butter and I absolutely love it. It’s all natural and very easy to make. It’s made with essential oils that support your skin during pregnancy and because it doesn’t contain any toxic ingredients, it’s 100% safe for your baby too. You can find the recipe here.
Bath Salts: I seriously would not survive pregnancy without my epsom salt baths. They are amazing for sore muscles and all the aches that come along with pregnancy. I take an epsom bath a few times a week and it helps so much to sooth and relax my hips and back.
1/2 cup of Epsom salts
3 drops valor essential oil
3 drops copaiba essential oil
3 drops lavender essential oil
*you can do any combo of oils in Epsom salts but these are the ones I use for aches during pregnancy 🙂
Pregnancy Sore Muscles Roller Bottle: I also have my own homemade roller bottle of essential oils that I love having with me at all times! I rub it on my back, ribs, hips, wherever the soreness is and it helps immensely!
In a 10 ml roller bottle add:
1o drops copaiba oil
10 drops lavender oil
5 drops marjoram oil
5 drops Idaho balsam fir oil
3 drops each of: frankincense, juniper, helichrysum, and valor oils
Top off with fractionated coconut oil or carrier oil of your choice!
Essential Oils: In addition to the recipes already mentioned, I use several essential oils to support a healthy pregnancy but I won’t list them all off here 🙂 But I will tell you all that I absolutely love using stress away, bergamot, and gentle baby!! These are definitely pregnancy essentials that I recommend to every expectant mama. I use both gentle baby and stress away for emotional balance and diffuse them when I’m feeling overwhelmed and stressed… these pregnancy hormones sure can get a little crazy! Bergamot is also amazing for emotional balance. This is actually my all time favorite oil! It really helps calm my nerves and uplift me so I use it on a daily basis. I also use gentle baby on my face every night and to support my stretching belly 🙂
Lavender Lip Balm: Another essential is this lavender lip balm! Between this cold winter air and these pregnancy hormones, my lips seem to get really chapped. I love applying this throughout the day to keep my lips soft and moisturized.
A high quality diffuser: I mentioned that I love using essential oils during pregnancy. If you’re not familiar with essential oils, it can be confusing to know how to use them. I teach all about ways to use them in my wellness community and one thing I highly recommend doing is diffusing! There are so many benefits of diffusing during pregnancy. It’s uplifting, relaxing, calming, can provide emotional balance, supports better sleep, and so much more! I highly recommend have a diffuser during pregnancy because it really can help so much and it can be used during labor and delivery too! I use this diffuser from Young Living. You can learn more about the benefits of diffusers and essential oils here.
I hope you found this post helpful, especially if you’re expecting a little one too! What are some of your pregnancy essentials?
