I used to really struggle with keeping my skin healthy in the winter and over the last two years I’ve done a lot of experimenting to figure out what I could do support my dry skin in the cold weather. I used to really struggle with things like dryness, flakiness, and redness- and I’ve learned how to combat these things naturally! Now, my skin is soft, smooth, has even color, hydrated, and I rarely get breakouts! Here’s a step by step look at what my natural beauty journey has looked like and what my current daily routine is (although I follow many of these practices year round).
- I stopped using any and all harsh products and chemicals on my skin. When I was in college, my skin was in such bad shape that I actually stopped using any type of soap or cleanser on it. Every time I would wash it, it would burn, itch, and just make matters worse. So I started only using water. This was a temporary solution but didn’t really fix the real problem- which was that my skin was dry and sensitive and something was making it that way. When I began my natural wellness journey almost two years ago, I began learning about all the hidden chemicals in the majority of beauty products. I was shocked to find that many beauty products contain ingredients that are not only toxic (hormone disruptors, cancer causing carcinogens, etc.) but these ingredients were also known for irritating skin and causing a whole host of other skin issues. I honestly had no idea why these types of ingredients would be in skin care products… so I ditched them all. After all, our skin is our largest organ so I figured that what I put on my face needed to not only support my complexion- but it needed to benefit my whole body. When I stopped using these mainstream skincare products, I saw a huge difference in my skin. Less dryness, redness, and breakouts. But I still wanted more improvement.2. I started using essential oils as part of my skincare routine. In April 2015, I had just experienced the worst winter for my skin that I had ever had. I was pregnant through the whole winter, and the combination of cool dry weather and the extra hormones took a real toll on my skin. That month, I bought a Young Living Premium Starter Kit and began using oils on my face. This was hands-down the most game changing thing I’ve ever done for my skin. I started using tea tree oil as a spot treatment, purification oil as a toner, and frankincense oil for added moisture and to help with unwanted/old marks and spots. The results were honestly amazing!! I immediately started seeing results while I was still pregnant and after I had my baby. I was so pleased with how much my skin was improving and I couldn’t believe that something so simple was working that well.
3. I began using all-natural ingredients to support my skin.
As I mentioned in step 1, I decided to say goodbye to all products that contained harsh and toxic ingredients because they weren’t doing my skin any favors. At the point I began making my own skin products with ingredients like coconut oil, almond oil, witch hazel, Shea butter, and essential oils. My skin continued to drastically change and I was very pleased! I used these homemade products for about a year, until I discovered Young Living’s beauty line.
4. I continued using essential oils on my skin and discovered Young Living’s Beauty Line.
At the point, I really was loving all my homemade beauty products but I had friends and family raving about Young Living’s beauty line so I wanted to try it. In April 2016 (exactly one year after starting this whole natural skincare journey) I splurged and ordered several items from their beauty and skincare line. I had thought that I loved my homemade products, but these already made beauty products were a complete game changer. I researched all their ingredients and was so pleased to know that they were 100% toxin-free and all-natural! I began using these in my daily routine and I never looked back.
Here’s a look at my current beauty regimen and why I use each product.
Cleanse: when I shower in the morning, I wash my face with the Art Gentle Cleanser. One wash only requires a nickel size of soap, so the bottle lasts a long time. After 10 months of using this, my bottle isn’t even half gone! This cleanser is very gentle and doesn’t dry out my skin at all like other cleansers have in the past. It’s full of great ingredients like Orchid flower extract and frankincense, royal hawaiian sandalwood, melissa, lemon, lavender oils.
Tone: after I wash my face, I use the Art Toner. This removes any extra dirt or grime that can hide in our pores and it’s all very moisturizing and not drying at all! It also helps to balance the pH of your skin. If I forget to wash my face at night (which happens far too often) this also works as my morning after make-up remover. Don’t tell me you’ve never had leftover make-up on your face in the morning 🙂 This toner contains witch hazel, orchid extract, aloe vera, green tea leaf extract, and peppermint, royal hawaiian sandalwood, frankincense, lavender, lemon, and melissa essential oils.
Moisturize: Once my face dries, I let it breathe for a few minutes and apply my Sandalwood Moisture Cream. This moisturizer is my skin’s bff in the winter! It’s the most moisturizing and hydrating cream I’ve ever met and it makes my skin so happy. It’s actually made for all skin types but is especially nourishing for dry skin. I apply a nickel size amount to my whole face- a little goes a long way. After using this for 10 months, I still have over half of the container left. This cream contains some amazing ingredients like: olive fruit, Phellodendron bark extract, barley extract, shea butter, rosehip oil, wolfberry seed oil, Calendula, Chamomile, grapeseed extract, orange blossom extract, rosebud extract, St. John’s Wort extract, Vitamin E, Vitamin A, Aloe Vera, and several essential oils including: coriander, royal hawaiian sandalwood, ylang ylang, geranium, myrrh, lavender, rosemary, and bergamot. This moisture cream is seriously good stuff! I could not live without it.
Eye Cream: Last, I apply a tiny pea sized amount of Wolfberry Eye Cream right under my eyes. This amazing cream is a water-based moisturizer the has antiaging properties and helps sooth tired eyes and minimizes the appearance of circle and fine lines. It contains wolfberry seed extract which gives it its antiaging properties. It also containes alfalfa extract, barley extract, witch hazel, shea butter, cucumber extract, chesnut extract, green tea, jojoba oil, rosehip oil, avocado oil, and several nourishing essential oils.
Make-up Removal: First, I removed all my make-up with an organic cotton washcloth and the Art Toner. (I only wash my face in the mornings and this works well for me). See morning routine for full details on this product.
Spot Treatment: Then I use essential oils as a spot treatment on my face. I only apply essential oils to my face in the evening and not in the morning. For any spots or bumps that need immediate attention (aka, I want them to be gone asap) I apply tea tree and Manuka oil. If I have any dry patches on my skin, I apply purification oil and this essential beauty serum. For any spots or marks that I want to fade, I apply frankincense essential oil! These oils have made such a big difference in my skin!
Moisturize & Brighten: In the evening, I like to apply Sheerlume moisture cream on my entire face. This cream helps to brighten and balance skin tone and is extra moisturizing in the winter. It helps with redness, skin tone unevenness, and gives my skin that extra boost of moisture that it needs when it’s cold out. To be honest, I used to never leave the house without make-up because my skin tone was uneven and I would have a lot of redness. I honestly don’t mind making a target run without make-up anymore!
Extra Skin Support: Last, I like to put 2-3 drops of Copaiba essential oil into my hand and rub it all over my skin. This oils supports healthy skin, promotes a youthful appearance, and helps minimize unwanted lines and pores.
